Education and Career programs help youth create aspirations for the future by becoming proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations and embrace technology to achieve success with future employment and a career.
Project learn reinforces and enhances the skills and knowledge young people learn at school during the hours they spend at the Club and in the home. This comprehensive strategy is based on Dr. Reginald Clark's research showing that students do much better in school when they spend their non-school hours engaged in fun, educational activities. These activities include leisure reading, writing activities, homework help and tutoring, games like Scrabble® that develop young people's cognitive skills, and incentives to reward Club members for positive academic participation. Also, Project Learn emphasizes parent involvement and collaboration between Club staff and school professionals in creating the best after-school learning environment for all Club members.
Power Hour provides comprehensive homework help and tutoring after school. Every club member at each branch receives 45 minutes of homework help a day. By utilizing resources, activities, and information, Club professionals create a Power Hour program designed to raise the academic proficiency of all Club members and help them become independent learners.
Money Matters
Money Matters is a financial program designed specifically for youth ages 13-18. The program, created with the Charles Schwab Foundation, consists of two 8-week sessions with our local Capital One volunteers. These volunteers provide the teens with knowledge to do the following: balance a checkbook, make a budget, know the difference between debit and credit cards, save/invest for college and retirement, start a small business and develop a business plan, and open a savings account or investment account.
Math Blazers
Math Blazers is a locally developed program designed to improve math skills during the school year and prepare students for 8th grade algebra. It includes the following components:
- Beat the clock - members compete against each other to successfully answer math problems in the shortest amount of time;
- Math Relay - members are divided into teams of four and work together to solve a math problem before the other teams;
- Math Marathon - members compete against one another to solve more difficult written math problems with speed and accuracy.
At the end of each week is a Competition Day where all grades come together to cheer each other on in a fun way and all participants are praised and commended. In April the youth who participated are better prepared for the State TAKS test. At the end of the school year BGCCC Math Blazers programs from each branch attend the Dallas area competition.
